British Energy Group plc

British Energy Group plc is the UK’s largest generator of electricity. With a dedicated workforce of about 6,000 skilled professionals, we produce around one-fifth of the nation’s electricity.  We own and operate eight nuclear power stations.  In addition, we own and run a coal-fired power station.

Our nuclear stations have a combined capacity of almost 10,000 megawatts, whilst our coal-fired plant adds a further 1,960 megawatts of output.

We operate two types of nuclear reactor: the advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR); and a pressurised water reactor (PWR). Sizewell B is the only PWR nuclear power station in our portfolio.

Frazer-Nash Consultancy

We are one of the UK’s biggest providers of systems and engineering technology, with nearly 260 permanent employees at six UK sites - Dorking, Bristol, Burton-on-Trent, Glasgow, Plymouth, and in the North West, together with a satellite office in Weymouth. Howden

We designed and developed the CO2 circulators, or submerged blowers, that provide the heat transfer in the Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs) that provide the bulk of the UK’s nuclear generated electricity; units that once installed operate with no maintenance during plant operation. We also provided the centrifugal and axial fans used in the cooling and other auxiliary systems.

For the more common water cooled reactors, we supply the fans associated with the various safety systems and reactor building cooling, and the diaphragm compressors for radioactive gas leak recovery. Where these gases have to be compressed to high pressure it is our compressors that are mainly preferred.
