Nuclear New Build Part II - 26th February 2008

The most recent presentation on nuclear new build designs by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) and GE Hitachi Ltd, was held in Halcrow’s Glasgow office on 26 February 2008. The event was attended by approx 65 people from nuclear industry and enterprise related organisations across central Scotland. The evening started with refreshments followed by the first presentation by Mr Keith Bradley, Regional Vice-President of AECL. Mr Bradley discussed the technical and safety aspects of the CANDU reactor design and gave his unique perspective of the nuclear new build landscape in the UK. This was followed by an equally impressive presentation by Mr Joe Carelli of GE Hitachi who touched on the unique design features of GE’s boiling water reactor. The event was a follow on from the earlier presentations in December 2007 where Westinghouse and Areva presented their new build reactor designs to almost 100 guests from across the industry.

Februarys meeting was also the first BNES event in the UK to use web and audio conferencing to transmit the presentations to other parts of the UK. British Energy at Torness had 12 people attend their conference room where the presentation was projected onto a screen and a conference phone used to listen to the presentations. This also gave the remote attendees the opportunity to take part in the discussion at the end of the presentations. In addition to the remote attendees at Torness nuclear power station, the meeting was also joined by 8 people from Halcrow’s Handforth office and satellite office at Bettyhill in Caithness, where Halcrow’s Principal Environmental Specialist, Ms Fiona Henderson said, “The use of WebEx to transmit these presentations is an excellent step forward for the society and gives remote or outlying areas the opportunity to take part in the tremendous events that the BNES CASS branch run. The use of WebEx has not only opened new avenues for remote office locations but cut out travelling to this lecture which would have polluted the atmosphere with approx 2.5 metric tonnes of CO2”.
